The !Treepad application, available for Linux and Windows (all versions since 95), operates from one small (314 kilobytes) executable file.
!Treepad builds its data organization around a user-defined 'tree', upon which named nodes are created for data placement. The tree, viewed in the left pane, acts as an expandable and collapsible hierarchal index for navigating and editing the !Treepad document. The contents of the nodes, called 'articles' and viewed in the right pane, can contain text and links.
Text can be easily inserted, copied, moved, deleted, and imported/exported to and from the tree. Articles can contain up to one megabyte of text. There are facilities to search the document tree or an individual article, alphabetically sort the tree or sub-trees, and find and replace article text. Links added to an article can point to tree locations, local files (opened in their associated application), or web sites.
The power of !Treepad is in its simplicity and ease of use to manage and organize data Í all in a lightweight application that consumes few operating system resources.
The limitations of !Treepad Lite are its single level of undo and its formatting—the only way to differentiate a text section within an article is by tabs, returns, and suitable characters—which is merely a limitation of plain text. The shareware !TreePad Plus expands on !Treepad Lite by allowing image inclusion and rich text formatting. Nevertheless, !Treepad Lite offers a powerful text organizer that may fulfill everything some users require, or else may introduce the possibilities of !Treepad Plus.
