  • The Mac mini is a perfect candidate for this. Plex doesn’t need a lot of horsepower to manage and stream your media, unless it transcodes video. (If you do have a lot of videos that need transcoding, a NAS might not be a good fit for Plex.) In this article, I’m going to tell you how you can set up a Mac mini as a dedicated Plex server.

I used to run Mac OS Server but since Apple has started to strip it of what I used it for I am just running Mac OS. My uses are Plex Server, iTunes server, File server, Central backup to back-blaze, VPN server, I-device management with imazing and windows virtual machine, plus more uses which escapes me right now.

Mac Mini As Home Server

Here is what I would like to do.

I want the Mac Mini to be hooked up directly to the AIrport Extreme. The Mac Mini will also be hooked up to the Sony TV.

I am debating to hook up the external Harddrive to the Mac Mini or the Airport Extreme. I wanted to put all my media on this and to also have iTunes on the mac mini and imac look to thhe exter harddrive for the iTunes library. The Apple TV will be on the downstairs tv and will look towards the itunes library for the mac mini.

All of the other laptop will also be on the network. I was hoping to be able to have them look to the external harddrive for the iTunes library when they were on the netwrok and then look towards their own harddrive when they are not.

Does anyone have suggestiosn so far?

I was told I can make it so my iPad can play movies and shows and also music from my external hardrive. Not sure how to do this. Was told I needed a hardrive that was meant to be a server and not a backup. I was also told there was a way to do the same for the iPhones and was told there was some way of getting to my harddrive if I was on wifi somewhere else, some remote desktop type thing.

Any help or suggetions is appeciated. IF you think there is a link or another post please let me know.

Thank you for your time in advance.
